This press conference is with Dr. Pickering as the Director of Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the Chairman of the Working Group for Tracking and Computation of the International Geophysical Year (IGY), concerning the Soviet Union's successful launch of the first artificial satellite, Sputnik I, on October 4, 1957. Dr. Pickering states that JPL had been tracking the satellite.
